A Time For Change?

Crises and deadlocks, when they occur, have at least this advantage, that they force us to think. -Jawaharlal Nehru

Regardless of how we got here, we are in the thick of something far greater than we could have imagined. Avoiding contact with friends and loved ones, running on empty streets, essential shopping with tight restrictions, homeschooling, working from home and/or fearing for your future. As the bells chimed ringing in the year 2020, THIS was not what any of us planned for.

However, lets not dwell! This, for now, is the new normal.

  • What if we took this as a message to slow down?

  • What if we used this time to reflect and re-evaluate?

  • What if we have been given the opportunity to reconnect with ourselves and realign with our values?

Close scrutiny will show that most 'crisis situations' are opportunities to either advance, or stay where you are. -Maxwell Maltz

In many ways, the world has been spinning out of control. Chronic disease is on an ever increasing upward trajectory. Funding for global healthcare seems to be dwindling. Our plastic problem and C02 emissions are greater than at any time in our history. Our seas are becoming over-fished, our soil over-farmed, our attention is being over consumed. And that's just the tip of the iceberg!

So, STOP! Breathe in.......breathe out (and repeat x10)

Ask yourself these questions:

  • If you could start fresh, would you still choose to live the life you currently lead?

  • What do you regret NOT starting, pursuing, learning, or following through on?

  • When life goes back to [normal], what change(s) would you make?

  • Are you choosing your 'ideal life' or settling for what's comfortable?

These are equally hard, challenging, but exhilarating questions to focus in on. Never, are we provided an opportunity to stop, think, reframe, and retrain ourselves amidst the chaos of life. Never do we get to stop and review while everything continues around us. Never, have we been better placed technologically, intellectually, and connected through social platforms, to begin to rewrite our story.

So what have you been putting off? What are you willing to invest this time into? Many, if not most, will whittle away hours of time and focus binge watching popular streaming services like Netflix, or mind-numbingly scrolling through social media platforms such as facebook, instagram, or pinterest (yup, guilty!).

Have you ever wanted to play an instrument, learn a new language, or to practice cooking from scratch? Have you considered a lifestyle change such as starting a plant-based diet, trying a cleanse, joining an online workout program, following a running plan, replacing soda/fizzy drinks with water, creating a meditation ritual, or insisting on 7+ hours of sleep? What about pursuing a new career? Are you truly happy with your current position. Is it stable. Is it needed. Is it YOU?

We, in the United Kingdom, like many of you out there, are experiencing social distancing and lockdown measures for the foreseeable future. Lets assume that this continues for the next 10-12 weeks. How can you use this time to benefit and grow yourself? Through every crisis lies opportunity.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. -Albert Einstein

This is not a time for playing small. This world needs leaders. This world needs people like you and me to stand up and pursue our passions. To radiate positivity, to demonstrate courage, resilience, and growth; and to take ownership of your circumstances.

Make no mistake - there is a global pandemic, a healthcare crisis like we've never seen before in our lifetime, and it is incredibly important to follow Government guidelines and to stay safe.

But this I say to you: Seize this moment, this opportunity, this time you've been dealt to connect with yourself and your values, and come through the other side the person you always hoped you could be.*

I too sometimes need a kick up the backside. I am with you. I am choosing to see this as opportunity within the crisis to grow, to learn, and to lead.

[*only if this pep talk excites you. Otherwise, keep being you. You're awesome!]

One thing is for sure. This world will never be the same again! We have been forced into a hard reset, and as we come out the other side it is inevitable that things will change. Lets hope that our human connection, family values, community spirit, small businesses, our health and education systems, and our key workers rise to the forefront of society.
